In this piece the aim is to recreate the 'Sirens' chapter of Ulysses with reference to Nabokov's essay question,'Ulysses is a fat book of more than two hundred and sixty thousand words; it is a rich book with a vocabulary of about thirty thousand words. Discuss some of them.' The various audiobooks played at the same time end up discussing the chapter in a siren-like wail. Each version interprets the chapter in a different way, reading at different speeds and pronouncing words with unique accents. Their differences cause phrases to jump out before being repeated in echo by another speaker. At other times, entire passages are lost in the garbled noise. The Ghost Machine software finds rhythmic music in the chapter, converting the written text into tuneful noise and proving a visual backdrop to the two recordings. Placed side by side, the two recordings immerse the listener in a both nerve-racking and oddly soothing scene of a Dublin bar.
